Styling Your Baby’s Hair for their Newborn Shoot

Something tells me the mommy of our newborn today is a fan of traveling or at the very least, the tropics.  Why?  Because the name of the beautiful little baby who graced my studio this afternoon is Isla, which is Spanish for Island.  Isla was a treat to photograph and we were able to get some great pictures!

As you can see from the photos little Isla had a beautiful head of hair, lots of luscious curls and waves… a newborn photographer’s dream!  The ironic thing about babies with lots of hair at birth is that they tend to lose it!  It’s an unfortunate fate and letdown sometimes for parents, but that newborn hair is essentially an after-effect of the pregnancy.  While the little newborns are busy doing their pregnancy thing mom’s hormones are all over the place and this is what leads to whether or not a newborn is born with no hair, some hair, or lots of hair.

This early hair that can grow in the womb and produce a baby with lots of hair is called lanugo.  And although babies usually lose this first go-round of hair, what does remain are the follicles and the hair patterns that were created.  So when their ‘real hair’ does grow in it utilizes these patterns and follicles.

But enough about newborn hair!  What was even better about today’s shoot was that Isla’s mommy was a return customer!  It’s always wonderful to have old customers coming back into the studio and Isla’s mother was especially nice and proved to be wonderful company.  The newborn shoots usually reach upwards of four hours so it’s always a bonus to have fun and outgoing parents in the house!

But the star today had to be little Isla’s beautiful hair.  The pictures just aren’t the same with a bald head and a few sprinkles of hair.  But that’s what bonnets are for!
