Brooks is from just up the road in Roswell, Georgia and he was right on the edge of the ideal age range to do a newborn shoot at ten days old. I usually only book babies between four and ten days old, but I’ve been known to make exceptions. Which brings me to a very unique feature of this particular newborn shoot, Brooks kept his eyes open for most of the shoot! It’s very unusual for a newborn to keep his or her eyes open during a photo shoot, but Brooks bucked the trend and allowed me to get some great shots of his beautiful brown eyes.
One of my favorite photos from this shoot is the model pose Brooks is striking in one of my favorite newborn props… my Scuttlebug Hat! The nice pastel colors go great with the turquoise basket and are also offset nicely by the wood backdrop. Brooks has wonderful skin which is something I know he’ll be happy about in about fifteen years when high-school comes knocking! But what it meant for me now is that I was able to breeze through my retouching work in photoshop! Of course that’s not something the baby can control and absolutely don’t mind when a little ‘skin work’ is needed on a newborn, but that’s the nature of the photography business. Sometimes there are little blessings in disguise that allow me to focus on other elements of the photograph during post, like getting the lighting or tones just right.
Overall though, I think my favorite picture is the one of Brooks in the cream basket with the soft filling. He looks so at peace with his hands gently laid across each other and the colors in the photo aren’t too overpowering, they’re just right, as was everything about little Brooks!
